The Coral Reef Regeneration Co-Lab will foster international collaborations to advance and disseminate ideas, research and practices to regenerate and sustain coral reefs worldwide. Our aim is to revolutionise the practice and outcomes of reef restoration by pivoting the field from trying, but often failing, to replace what has been lost, to developing vigorous, diverse reefs that will survive and thrive under the very different conditions expected in future.
In a world first, the Co-Lab will integrate science, innovation and finance to ensure that reef regeneration can succeed. Working hand-in-hand with scientists, the Co-Lab will foster development of innovative financing instruments and approaches to bring new resources from public and private sources of capital.
The virtual Co-Lab hub will be a window to the world, articulating in detail the new philosophy and practices of reef regeneration, developed at the Soneva Coral Dialogue of 2025, for others to access, learn from and build upon.
The Co-Lab will be a platform to share best practices and success. In the spirit of the Soneva Coral Dialogue, it will also be a place for honesty and transparency about the challenges experienced in efforts to regenerate reefs. This way the community will learn more quickly and develop effective collaborative solutions.
Some of the world’s most climate vulnerable countries are highly dependent on coral reefs for their economies and cultures. The Co-Lab will have a specific focus on developing and disseminating solutions for reef-dependent climate vulnerable countries.
The Coral Reef Regeneration Co-Lab will be run as a collaborative project between Soneva Conservation & Sustainability Maldives based at Soneva Fushi, and Maldives Coral Institute, which has a lab in Kuramathi Resort. It will host a virtual hub and promote collaborations to facilitate the project’s goal of wide international participation and rapid advance in the field. Exeter University, Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) will work closely with these teams as academic science, blue finance and policy partners.
